Hollow Knight: Silksong finally saw its long-awaited release Sept. 4, 2025 with a shockingly low $20 price tag. Team Cherry, publisher and producer of Silksong, originally teased the sequel a year after the release of Hollow Knight in 2017. The sequel released on many platforms, including Steam, Playstation and Xbox stores.

All marketplaces holding its release were down for the first 24 hours after its release, only allowing those lucky few to buy the game. Everyone who ordered the game in advance only got access to it around 48 hours after the crash.

Team Cherry, the developing team of both Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong, consists of three core members. Developers Ari Gibson, William Pellen and Jack Vine promoted and hyped Silksong to a 460,000-plus active player peak on Steam alone. The player count itself is not the craziest part; the game costing $20 on purchase with a 30% sales tax from Steam and more than 500,000 transactions means, from just Steam sales, the gross revenue was upwards of $7,000,000 between three developers.

Now lets move on from history and get into the game itself. Silksong, for starters, is not your typical indie platformer. It has unexpected details like cinematic cutscenes, voice acting and musically themed boss fights.

The difficulty itself is delivered just as promised. The Hollow Knight community asked Team Cherry for a challenging game, and they got exactly what they asked for. Some parts of the gameplay itself can be easier and much harder than the original. Between Hornet—the main protagonist of Silksong—being able to vault ledges from below, to the Knight—the main protagonist of Hollow Knight—having a strictly vertical pogo, both new and veteran players may spend more time than they thought adjusting to the new controls.

Silksong has between 43 to 48 total distinct bosses with entirely unique move sets. (Hayden Spurrier)

Hollow Knight is most popular for its boss fights, and Silksong lives up to that reputation perfectly. Every single boss encounter is both difficult, doable and unique. The soundtrack that accompanies each fight is well-crafted and invigorating, urging the player to keep trying until they defeat the boss. Out of the 15-plus bosses I have beaten so far, my favorites are The Cogwork Dancers—two agile mechanized steel robots mimicking ballet in combat—which takes place in a city-like region called The Citadel, and The Last Judge—an towering guard with a fire-spitting flail—who is there to stop you from entering the Citadel.

The voice acting is a facet I never thought would be as important as it actually is. Between navigating to critical NPC’s and encountering hidden boss fights, the built in voice acting while exploring is extremely under-appreciated in the modern game industry. The map selling NPC, Shakra, has become an internet sensation with her musical voice acting that can be heard in any region when you get close enough to her. This feature is aimed to help guide players towards the crucial character and help them navigate through the world of Silksong.

Overall, the game runs amazing for its size and price. It is also cripplingly addictive in both its gameplay and story. I highly recommend purchasing it both for entertainment and to support the amazing development team that produced it.
