With the start of each school year, many seniors begin the search for the college they plan to attend after graduation. Oftentimes, however, cost restricts the availability of post-high school options.
The Parent Support Network (PSN) will host a financial aid workshop for seniors and their parents to learn more about the financial aid process and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), at 7 P.M. in room 603 of Building 6, Feb. 25.
“We have the FAFSA workshop to help families apply for financial aid,” Jon Endicott, associate principal, said. “It is very important to fill out the form correctly. Students can qualify for Pell Grants, Cal Grants and need-based aid to help pay for college.”
The submission period for FAFSA applications lasts Jan. 1-March 2.
“My dad filled out the FAFSA already and is acquainted with the paper work,” Stephen Willems, ’08, said. “He did most of the work, but I think the workshop would be helpful for people that have never done it before.”
The workshop also covers the Cal Grant. For eligibility to receive this grant, students must fill out the FAFSA and GPA Verification form (with at least a 2.0 GPA) and must receive an impending high school diploma.
“I was nervous because it is a huge deal,” Jeff Brown, parent of senior Taryn, said. “There were a lot of papers and questions that ask you tons of questions about yourself, your income and previous jobs; it’s a laborious task and it’s intimidating.”
Cal grants supply students with support and money for college. High school graduates are guaranteed a grant as long as they meet academic, financial and eligibility requirements as well as submit the two forms by March 2.
Other workshops are scheduled throughout the Fresno area, each offering different scholarships. Reedley College and the Willow International Center will host the California Cash for College Workshop from 6:30-8 P.M., Feb. 21.
