Adventure P.E. offers many different physical opportunities for students. After organizing it last year, Scott Callisch, P.E. coach/video production teacher, is ready for another year of physically adventurous excursions.
For the first activity of this year, Callisch decided to repeat surfing in Santa Cruz on Sept. 25. Other P.E. adventures included biking through Yosemite National Park, kayaking in Morro Bay, spelunking in Moaning Cavern and geocaching in Woodward Park.
Adventure P.E. allows students to experience physical activity unavailable on campus.
“Adventure P.E. sparks interests in activities that kids can do in their spare time,” Callisch said. “They’re different kinds of physical activities that aren’t required for a regular P.E. class.”
As the first choice of the year, surfing enables students to gain an unusual physical experience.
“Surfing is a fun adventurous activity to do,” Callisch said. “Not a lot of people get the chance to do it. It’s very physical and not an easy thing to do.”
Last year, the surfers fought the rain and chilly coast weather but managed to catch some waves.
“Last year was a great way to start off surfing because nobody died,” Callisch said. “There were no injuries and everyone got up on their board and surfed.”
First time surfer Alex Barisic, ’11, enjoyed her time last year in Santa Cruz.
“It was difficult surfing last year, but it was a new experience,” Barisic said. “It was freezing and raining, but it was fun. This year, I’m not going because I researched and found out there was a shark in the area.”
With his experience on similar equipment, senior Trevor Bodi decided to try surfing as another boarding sport.
“I didn’t go last year because I thought it would be lame,” Bodi said. “This year, I’m so stoked to go. Since I know how to skateboard and snowboard, surfing should be somewhat easy to me. It’s like the same thing, but on a different element.”
Students interested in Adventure P.E. may sign up in the high school office. Each trip costs $40.
