Update: At homecoming on Oct. 16, the four classes went head-to-head in the float competition, making two rounds around the track for an uproarious audience. The senior float, themed Fantasyland, was awarded first place. Over 40 students in costume performed at half time. The sophomores’ New Orleans Square received second, with the juniors’ Adventureland took third. The freshmen rounded out the competition with Tomorrowland. After a second-place finish two years ago, the class of 2010 has yet to earn top honors in the homecoming float competition. As the final float opportunity approaches, the senior class hopes to triumph over the reigning champs, the sophomores.
This year, student leadership chose the theme “the happiest places on earth.” Each class picked a distinct land from the famous theme park. The seniors will represent Fantasyland, complete with such icons as the Matterhorn and Small World.
“We chose [Fantasyland] because it is the embodiment of someone’s Disneyland experience,” student body president Tatiana Fontes said. “When people go to Disneyland, the rides they most look forward to are the iconic Matterhorn, the Teacups and Small World.”
With only one attempt at the win remaining, the seniors say they have put careful planning and effort into their representation of Fantasyland.
“I wanted to make memories for my senior year,” Zach Mizner said. “So I went to all the meetings. It’s the last year to get involved in this, so I wanted to make the most of it.”
Fontes took on many of the responsibilities for building the float.
“I was in charge of delegating tasks to the other senior leadership members and making sure we had all the necessary supplies to build our float,” Fontes said. “It was very slow at first, and towards the end; we’ll be working until the last minute to tighten up all the loose ends.”
According to Fontes, high hopes have been placed by potential spectators on the class of 2010.
“There’s a lot of expectations surrounding our float. It’s our fourth year at this,” said Fontes. “We have experience, so everyone’s just watching to see if we can pull it off.”
Mizner echoes Fontes’ anticipations for homecoming night.
“I think that we will earn first place,” he said. “If you’re not first, you’re last. We’re the best, so we’ll win.
Fontes expects nothing less than complete obliteration of the other class’ floats.
“I expect our float to be the best out there,” said Fontes. “We deserve a win after being gypped of deserved wins freshmen and sophomore year.”
Homecoming will be at Clark Intermediate Stadium in Clovis with junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. and varsity starting at 7, Oct. 16
