With the 2009-10 year completed, students and teachers look forward to a summer free from the usual classroom work. In the same way, The Feather will halt operations until school resumes on Aug. 16.
But before leaving the year behind, The Feather would like to reflect on some key events. This year’s 40-member staff produced more than 530 articles to capture campus news and issues. In addition, staffers published a myriad of videos, slideshows, podcasts and comics.
In short, a lot happened this year. After covering graduation, this article details some highlighted content in sports, academics and extracurriculars.
GRADUATION
The 29th commencement was held May 27 in the Peoples Church sanctuary, drawing a packed crowd of friends and family. Graduates of the class of 2010 received various scholarships and awards at the ceremony.
In accordance with tradition, salutatorian Tatiana Fontes gave an address to the audience about her experiences at the school. Valedictorian Elizabeth Grossman followed, speaking about how her years on campus have impacted her life.
While not a part of graduation, The Feather would like to acknowledge its choice for Student of the Year, Da Eun Sunwoo. The editors decided to recognize Sunwoo for her multi-faceted contributions to the Fresno Christian community.
SPORTS
In the realm of athletics, one of the most noteworthy events was the girls’ basketball victory in the CIF Central Section Valley Championship. The team earned champion status in Division V after three years of close losses.
Following the success of girls’ basketball, the golf team advanced to the Central Section Division V Valley Championships. The players earned second place in the tournament, falling one stroke behind the first-place winner.
The baseball team achieved an 8-1 record in the West Sequoia League. Although the Eagles lost in the playoffs, this season heralded the greatest number of wins in the program’s history.
Under new coach David Tatum, the volleyball team experienced a winning season, finishing with a record of 7-1 in league. The girls made it to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs for the first time in campus history. After the season, Tatum was recognized as Coach of the Year for the West Sequoia League.*
Runners on the cross-country team vied for the CIF Central Section Division V Valley Championship. Senior Doug Daniel placed 6th at this event, making it his best run of the season, according to his coach.
After competing throughout the season, some members of the track and field team qualified to attend championships. Junior Josiah Ford placed first in long jump and triple jump at the All-Sierra Championships, where junior Andrew Evans took first in 110-m hurdles.
At the following CIF Sequoia Sierra Sections Championships, Ford qualified further to compete at CIF Central Section Finals, where he earned tenth place in triple jump.
In addition, the football team finished with a 1-3 record in league. The girls’ tennis team and boys’ tennis team achieved records of 3-9 and 8-5, respectively. For soccer, the girls’ team completed the season with 1-7-0 and the boys’ team with 0-10-0.
While before there were not enough students to form a softball team, several seniors joined together to compete this season. Despite heavy losses, the players claimed the experience was memorable and fun.
With new head coach Robin Whitford, the cheer team went on to win third place at USA Nationals. The squad also competed at several other competitions, taking first place at both the Clovis Pep Classic and the JAMZ Competition.
