Adventure P.E. will return to Pismo Beach for the third annual kayaking trip, Nov. 6. Students who signed up for the event and paid the $25 fee will depart from school at 8 a.m. and return at 6 p.m.
Video productions adviser Scott Callisch, who spearheads Adventure P.E., arranged for a company in Pismo to instruct the students.
“We have used them [the company] every year except last year due to large waves, so we kayaked at Avila Beach for safety purposes,” Callisch said. “The company is well aware of us being beginners and constantly checks the tides so no student is in danger.”
Prior to getting in the water, the group will spend about 10 minutes discussing safety. Those involved will kayak through rock caves and formations during the course.
Last year freshman Katie Baker attended the event and attempted to kayak for the first time.
“I though kayaking was a lot of fun,” Baker said. “After we kayaked for awhile, we stopped to rest and found a bird skeleton-it was interesting.”
Callisch, who owns and often uses his own kayak, appreciates kayaking as a form of relaxing exercise.
“I enjoy being out on the ocean and exploring where I’ve never been-the unknown adventure,” Callisch said. “Riding the waves is relaxing, but in an exercising way.”
Although the draw of the ocean may appeal to some students, others have poor experiences with kayaking and opt not to attend this trip.
“I’ve tried kayaking before and wasn’t very good at it,” Victoria Hindes, ’12, said. “I had trouble controlling the kayak; I just made a fool of myself.”
During the jaunt last year, Baker also suffered from unruly ocean waves.
“My least favorite part of the trip was falling in the ocean,” Baker said. “We were done with kayaking and were heading back to shore when a wave flipped the kayak over. I was unable to change and remained wet for the rest of the day.”
