In preparation for the Feb. 25 talent show, student leadership is holding auditions on Jan. 26-29 at lunch in Ground Zero Main.
Students interested in participating in the West Sequoia League Talent Show must attend the auditions and get approval for their acts.
About seven different schools from around the area participate in this event. Three students from each school then travel from campus to campus and perform in front of the student bodies. At each venue, performers can achieve first, second or third place and win from $50-100.
“We stay in the talent show competition year after year because it’s an opportunity to interact with other schools in things rather than just sports,” leadership adviser Robert Foshee said. “It’s a chance to practice your skill in front of an audience. But I personally like the talent show because of all the different talents I see.”
For first-time performer Katherine Bennett, ’13, this opportunity is a time to express something she enjoys doing.
“I’m really excited because I enjoy performing,” Bennett said. “I just like the feeling of my hands sweating, my blood pumping and my adrenaline running. What’s surprising is that when you get on stage, everything suddenly seems peaceful.”
Though undecided about what act she will present, Bennett is debating between playing the piano or singing a duet with her friend.
“I’ve been singing in a choir since fourth grade and, even though it’s not my strongest talent, I love it.” Bennett said. “But I think it makes it even more special for me to play the piano because I’ve never had help; I’ve basically taught myself. Yet, overall, it’s a great way to thank God for my talent.”
While some students have a fun time performing, others would rather watch. Senior Tatiana Fontes, student body president, has attended the talent show for several years and appreciates the fact that the finale ends on campus.
“The talent show is always an opportunity to get with other schools and share talents,” Fontes said. “Even though I feel like I don’t have a talent that can be composed on stage, I enjoy watching others perform.”
