Adventure P.E. students returned from a sunlit day of cross-country skiing in Badger Pass, Feb. 12.
Scott Callisch, head of Adventure P.E., organized the trip in order to introduce students to the sport.
“We went cross-country skiing because I figured no one had done it,” Callisch said. “I like to do things no one has done before.”
Despite the fact that only three students participated, Calisch says the trip went as planned.
“The small number of kids had no effect on the trip because skiing is an individual thing,” Calisch said. “The three people that went had a great time and that’s all that mattered.”
Freshman Katherine Bennett attended the excursion and encountered a little difficulty in the beginning.
“I enjoyed cross-country skiing very much,” Bennett said. “It was awkward at first, but once we got into the tracks, which were pressed in the snow, it became much easier.”
While at Badger Pass, Bennett found herself exposed to embarrassment and laughter.
“At the very beginning I fell as a result of my skis’ becoming tangled,” Bennett said. “It took me about three minutes to get back up.”
With an undesired start, Bennett ended the snow day with further embarrassment.
“After we had finished skiing, we ate lunch; I was eating some soup. Attempting to turn in my chair, I knocked it over and spilt the soup all over my legs,” Bennett said.
Although Benett enjoyed the time away from school, cross-country skiing proved challenging.
“The hardest part was trying to stop,” Bennett said. “Most of the time my skis got tangled up as I attempted to snowplow.”
As the day came to an end, some students left with a new knowledge of the sport and satisfaction from trying something new.
“It was very interesting to learn, and I am glad I went on the trip,” Bennett said.
