Someone once said that too often we are so preoccupied with the destination that we forget the journey. But the opposite has proven to be true about my high school experience at Fresno Christian.
Although I look forward to the new chapter opening in my life, I prefer now to reflect on the past. The best years of my life thus far have been my high school years. Having to say goodbye to those years is heartbreaking. I?ve never had a harder time letting go of a group of people like the family at Fresno Christian.
Some people have academics, some people athletics, and we all know our fair share of people in the arts ? but my high school career revolved around music.
Music has been a passion of mine ever since my parents forced me to play piano eight years ago. I fought them so hard on taking lessons because I thought playing piano was nerdy. Since then, I?ve been proven wrong.
Music has been the only outlet for me to fully plug in and hone my abilities. After playing piano, I eventually took up an interest in the guitar. I played around on the guitar and finally began to pick it up.
The drums and bass guitar came shortly after expanding the outlets that I was able to take advantage of here. As I fell deeper in love with music, it eventually became an activity that I was constantly involved in almost every day.
Video productions has also played a prominent role in high school for me. Video instructor Scott Callisch taught me a lot about how to properly film, edit and produce videos and movies. Film experience opened a lot of doors for me, one being The Feather.
Having never joined publications until my senior year, I had no idea what I was getting into. Journalism was always the loud class next door in my earlier years of high school. But I decided to give it a shot as the videographer.
Documentaries, fun shorts and news coverage videos all gave me the opportunity to explore videography and learn some new tricks along the way. Journalism adviser Greg Stobbe?s advice with covering news, stories and events, combined with Callisch?s execution techniques and methods, made for a great year of videography.
They gave me the ability to make work that I could proudly display on The Feather. My only regret is that I didn?t join journalism sooner.
In my last year as a high schooler at Fresno Christian, I can honestly say that I don?t regret a single thing. I?m grateful for every success I?ve had as well as every mistake I?ve made.
The way I see it, the mistakes are part of the great results too. It?s like a cake. Raw eggs are nasty by themselves, but without them you can?t get the fluffy cake.
I?ve made so many new friends this year. I feel like I could go up to anyone and give them a high five without it being awkward.
And that?s what I love most about Fresno Christian. We?re all a big happy family! Sure, we have our differences in character and interests; but in the end, we all love each other no matter what.
All in all, I can’t wait to see what lies ahead. But I’ll never forget the journey that was high school.
Tyler will attend Azusa Pacific University in the fall, majoring in film studies.
