From rap to music videos featuring evil teddy bears, the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) displayed the year’s visual apects of music, Sept. 12.
The show, broadcast on MTV from NOKIA Theater in Los Angeles, promised bizarre content from musicians who played up their unique styles.
Observing Lady Gaga’s ever-absurd outfits, and last year’s Kanye West-versus-Taylor Swift incident, viewers had high expectations for the VMAs.
According to Jeff Kane’s article on Robotceleb.com, Lady Gaga was pinned as the big winner in award predictions.
Meeting her expectations, Gaga left with a total of eight wins, including the coveted Video of the Year award for her hit song, “Bad Romance.”
A collection of celebrities gave away awards to musicians for their accomplishments in videos for the year. Justin Bieber’s breakthrough won him the prize for Best New Artist, and 30 Seconds to Mars claimed Best Rock Video.
In the “Professional Categories,” videos were recognized for visual quality. Muse won the Best Special Effects award with their evil teddy bears in “Uprising,” while Jay-Z and Alicia Keys were awarded for Best Cinematography in “Empire State of Mind.”
During the show, various musicians performed hit songs, including Bieber and Usher. As expected, the 2009 Kanye-Swift incident received attention when the time came for her song.
The opening act featured a performance by Eminem and Rihanna, in which they sang “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie.” The stage was lit in virtual red flames covering the screens, giving the resemblance of purgatory.
Host Chelsea Handler appeared onstage in a parody, disguised as Lady Gaga. To liven up the atmosphere, Handler encouraged everyone to “be on their worst behavior.”
MTV’s mission to show off the year’s standards in music was accomplished. Artists were praised for their individuality and talent.
