After four years of setbacks due to multiple conflicts, journalism adviser Greg Stobbe once again plans to lead a group to Europe.
The trip will go through Amsterdam, Bruges, Normandy and Paris in June 2011, with a theme focusing on areas where World War I and World War II occurred.
Stobbe held an informational meeting during lunch on Oct. 25 in Room 623, and another during the same day from 7-8:15 p.m. in Room 627. For those who plan to attend, a down payment of $600 is due by Nov. 10.
Some highlights of the trip include visiting museums, such as the Chocolate Museum in Bruges, and historical sites, like the Palace of Versailles and the Eiffel Tower. Students will also have the opportunity to bike ride in Kinderdijk (Holland) and see sights in both Amsterdam and Paris.
“The trip has a WWII history flavor,” Stobbe said. “It’s a little bit like putting yourself in a history book, but we?ll actually be there. Studying about a place and then actually visiting it gives us a greater appreciation for the people who lived and died there.”
Senior Ashlyn White attended the lunch meeting because she is interested in the theme of historical events.
“I’ve always been very interested [in WWI and WWII], so it’s going to be great to actually be where things have actually happened,” White said. “There’s Paris, which I think is going to be a lot of fun. Then there are little cities that he [Stobbe] picks that aren’t really tourists attractions. He gets really involved with other people’s culture, so I know that we will be learning a lot.”
An ’06 alumna, Kim Bimat went on the 2005 trip to Italy. She advises students to take advantage of this trip because everything is pre-planned and Europe is an ideal place to visit, she said.
“If I could go again, I would love to go. It was worth the money,” Bimat said. “I would advise anyone to go because the trip is planned for you, it’s safe, and you get to see what is culturally acceptable to them [Europeans].”
