In the sixth annual father-daughter game, the varsity girls’ basketball team triumphed over the parents, 68-54, Jan. 5.

With a 5-0 record held for the past five years, the fathers arrived ready to fight for another victory.

For the jump start, Mason, brother of sophomore Kristen Rosenthal, took possession. However, the girls quickly regained control, maintaining the lead throughout the game.

Although the lady Eagles swept their family members off the scoreboard, the game turned out to be a memorable experience for the parents and daughters, according to junior Brandi Thompson.

“I had fun doing it with my parents because they’re kind of old, and they can’t run,” Thompson said. “I was looking forward to it because it’s always a fun game, just playing your parents.”

Despite their age, the parents attempted to give the girls some competition. In some cases, the ball was thrown down the court, setting up a perfect shot, but was missed.

Although the girls scored several points, Odes, father of Brandi, said he enjoyed playing in the game.

“It was an awesome game,” Odes said. “I was proud to be out here with some great players, and I’m talking about the parents, not the kids. The parents were awesome. They got a little cheated on the scoreboard, the referees weren’t fair; but other than that, it was a good game.”

While most of the girls faced their fathers in competition, Rosenthal opposed her older brother, Mason.

“It was fun to play against the adults and my brother,” Rosenthal said. “I’ve never seen my brother play before, so it was fun to play with him, and just having a laid-back game was nice.”

The father-daughter game brought Mason back to the basketball court, allowing him to take note of his sister’s abilities.

“I haven’t been on the court for about five years, so this game got me back on the court again,” Mason said. “It was fun playing with the dads and girls, and I got to elbow Kristen in the nose. She’s better than I thought she was.”

For his last game, James White played against his daughter, Ashlyn, ’11. He relishes the chance for the girls to play with their parents and enjoys seeing the girls work together, he said.

“Playing with other parents and against our girls gives us an appreciation for what the girls do out there,” White said. “We see how much they have to run and how hard they have to work. We may not realize that until we have to go and do it.”

As this was also Ashlyn’s last game, she tried to take advantage of the opportunity to play against the team’s parents.

“It’s sad because it’s my last year, but it’s a lot of fun; every girl got to play and have fun,” Ashlyn said. “We don’t get to play with our parents that often, so it was nice to just get out there and have a good time.”
