For the past 30 years, in the coastal community of Cayucos, thousands of people have gathered on the pier in what has become the traditional “Polar Bear Swim.”
At 12 noon, “Uncle Sam” counts down and, under the watchful eye of the U.S. Coast Guard and the local fire department EMTs, the throng sprints into the ocean to celebrate the new year.
The event includes contests for farthest distance traveled, oldest participant, youngest participant and best costume.
Video Productions adviser Scott Callisch and his two sons — Mitchell, ’09, and Steve, ’12 — attended the 30th annual “Polar Bear Swim” and produced this video.
The Callisches have participated in the event for the past six years, making it a tradition in their family.
