Once again, a new school year starts and Back-to-School Night, now commencing the 34th session, began as parents joined together in the FC Gym, Aug. 22. From 7-9:30 p.m., parents attended classes where they went through their child’s schedule and received instructions necessary for the upcoming year.
Teachers must understand the importance of communicating their teaching strategies and the year-long plan they have to better instruct their students throughout the year. As head of the science department, Dan Harris understands the expectancy students and parents have in him.
?Parents have expectations,” said Harris, “It was good for me to be present to show that this is how I am, this is how I teach and this is how I see the world. I want to always be available and in communication with parents.?
First-time parents of high school students recognize that dedication is applied by the faculty in order to inform parents of what is to come throughout the year.
?We plan on staying with Fresno Christian all the way through,? Laura Fenster, mother of freshman Alexis Fenster said. ?I love to hear of the growth and development for the new academic plans of the year.?
Returning parents appreciated the chance to view the progression that occurrs throughout their child’s high school career by reviewing teachers’ course outlines and expectations.
?I’m able to meet my daughter’s teachers and understand what she is completing in class,? JoDee Wheeler, mother of senior Kendall Wheeler said. ?This, in return, helps me better support her at home.?
Each year, the cheer squad sets up a booth to raise funds and encourage school spirit with a bake sale. Parents were able to purchase treats between classes and make donations towards the cheer program, funding the ventures of the squad.
?The purpose of selling cookies is so money raised can benefit other needs in the cheer program,? senior Celeste Camacho, said. ?Doing this fundraiser at the beginning of the year puts our program at a good start for the rest of the activities to come.
Principal Todd Bennett agrees that parental attendance is essential to a child’s education and the foundation of the school. The importance of God in all aspects of the curriculum remains a large component in the basis of what the school delivers, Bennett says.
?This night gives the teachers a chance to talk about their program, expectations for the school year, homework policy and how they operate their classroom,” Bennett said. “We have a chance to pray with people and to use Scripture to guide our classrooms. God is here, God is present and we don’t hide the fact that we are Christians.?
