FOWLER SHUTS OUT EAGLES, 41-0–Oct. 21
For the second league game of the season, FC traveled to play the Fowler Redcats, for their homecoming of the season, Oct. 21. The Eagles failed to put up any points on the board as they lost 41-0.
FC received the ball first, but were quickly stopped as Fowler’s defense shut down the Eagles. Austin Rurik, ’12, went for only 21 yards on 16 carries and quarterback Tyler Krigbaum, ’12, also struggled, throwing 7-19-43.
Senior linebacker and lineman, Josh Grinage, says prior to the game he could tell the team was not ready to play.
“The fact that some of the guys were scared and knew we weren’t going to win, they didn’t really have the mindset they should have had,” Grinage said. “So that took some of them out of it and then Fowler scoring right off the bat didn’t help. We didn’t really bounce back like we usually do.”
Throughout the game the Eagles suffered from injuries. Sean Carter, ’12, was out due to the previous game against Riverdale, Adam Wood, ’12, suffered a minor concussion in the first quarter, Austin Rurik, ’12, went out at half time, and Martin Moreno, ’12, took a hit in the third quarter, dislocating his shoulder.
After Moreno was injured, head coach Dan Stockton made the decision to call the game.
“I wasn’t glad because you’re not supposed to quit,” Bobby Christopher, ’14, said who had five solo tackles. “It might have been the smart thing to do, but not necessarily what you want to be characterized by, but I guess it was the right thing to do.”
Assistant coach, Mick Fuller looks to their upcoming home game against Parlier and hopes to emphasize smart, physical football in practice.
“We need to focus on understanding and executing our assignments and playing physical, aggressive football,” Fuller said. “We are prone to sitting back and letting things come at us and happen to us. So we need to be more assertive on the field with our assignments.”
The Eagles will next host Parlier on Oct. 28.
