In 29 years of coaching at all levels, this year was the most challenging I have ever experienced! With two freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors and ten seniors to field a 11 man offense, 11 man defense and special teams, we were exceptional in all phases.
Every player was committed in every way. Not one boy ever hesitated to fill any position asked of him. We faced superior teams of exceptional depth, speed and size every week without hesitation.
It is a miracle that we survived ten games! Character, determination and perseverance with a special spiritual blessing helped us from ever folding or hanging our heads.
One special miracle was [senior] Austin Rurik, never played football, came out “just to kick”, decided to play. With one game remaining he is just 80 odd yards shy of a 1,000 yards rushing year with a single game record of 304 yards that will probably last for forever. A miracle for the team, yes, but a lifetime of memories and fame for him and his 17 teammates!
There was something special that revealed itself early on that I have never witnessed before in a football team. There was no hatred, malice nor a desire to hurt anyone, although this is an immensely physical game. Wanting to win, yes, but not at all costs.
I believe all of these young men will excel in their chosen fields as adults. All the coaches hope they gained more than just winning a few games from this years experience.
May they never forget their 2011 year which they won the first game ever on FC field and brought home the trophy at our homecoming game! Miracles? Maybe, at least a few little ones!
