The drama class will be performing their winter production, The Gift of the Magi, during the week of Nov. 14-19.
The play chronicles the story of an impecunious newlywed couple, Jim (Jacob Williams) and Della Young (Kendall Wheeler), during the holiday season. Despite their poverty, they have two possessions that give them joy and pride: Della?s hair and Jim?s antique family watch.
When Jim goes out for a night on the town, leaving him with little money, he must devise a plan to get enough funds to buy Della the perfect gift. In order to help out her neighbor, Clarice (Jenna Orcutt), Della gives away more than half the money she has saved for Jim and is left with a choice between her hair and finding the best gift for her husband.
The production includes other characters aside from the Youngs. From Della?s haughty older sister, Dot (Katie Baker Pauls), to Jim?s selfish coworkers, Art (Robbie Hill) and Digsby (Lucas Lopez), the show offers many other story lines as comic relief from the despondent main tale.
High school drama teacher Susan Ainley is proud of how her students have done so far and sees this production as perfect for the holiday season. It is a worthwhile message for the time of year, she says.
?[The Gift of the Magi] is a wonderful opportunity to start the Christmas season and come with your family to enjoy this beautiful story and support Fresno Christian drama as well as have a good time,? Ainley said.”
The department will perform a portion of the play during chapel, Nov. 15 and a performance for the elementary, Nov. 17 at 2:15 p.m.. The full play will be in production, Nov. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. in Ground Zero.
Admission is $5, and tickets can be purchased at the door.
