EAGLES SHOW TENACITY AGAINST CARUTHERS, 3-0–Jan 24
FC travled to Caruthers to face the Blue Raiders who did not expect the Eagles’ determination, however still prevailed with a 2-1 win, Jan 24.
As Caruthers is currently undefeated in league, beating every opponent by five goals or more the Eagles began the game with a preconceived idea of the outcome.
The Blue Raiders gained a point early on causing FC’s demeanor to loose enthusiasm. However, the defense prevailed by holding off another score until the last eighteen minutes of the half. Caruthers was able to find the net twice on a couple crosses to unmarked players in the box.
After a pep talk from coach Tony Martinez during half-time, the Eagles began to look invigorated once again; challenging their opponents to every ball.
Renewed with determination, FC forced a shut out in the second half, giving Caruthers the closest game of their season.
Brianna Walker, ’13, recognized the team’s problem areas and was proud to see FC come together late in the match.
“I think we played good in the second half more as a team,” Walker said. “I think I played hard and aggressive. But I think we could have passed more and had a better attitude towards each other.”
Martinez believes the early lapses were due to intimidation but despite the obvious mistakes was ultimately satisfied with the outcome.
“We started out a little slow in the first half,” Martinez said. “Once we realized we could play with them we played really well. This turn around occurred in the second half. I think the next time we play them we will come out strong. Overall the team has been playing well. I am proud of all of them for their effort.”
FC will play Fowler for the second time at home, Jan 26.
