EAGLES LOSE SECOND LEAGUE GAME OF SEASON–Jan. 24
After being defeated by the Tranquillity Tigers, Jan. 20, the Eagles were ambitious to win their second league game against the Caruthers Blue Raiders, Jan. 24.

The senior captains and Eagle head coach Santino Reynolds were aware of their forceful way of playing. In order to protect the basket, Reynolds advised the players to play man to man defense with stretches of zone. However, the Tigers were able to cruise through the Eagles? defense and defeated FC, 55-38, Jan. 24.

Both the Raiders and the Eagles came out tenacious from the first quarter. When the Raiders took shots, FC grabbed the rebounds right off of the backboard, preventing them from scoring as the Eagles won the first quarter, 11-8.

Despite losing the first quarter, the Raiders refused to be defeated and came out with intensity in the second quarter. Their guards made numerous 3 pointers, earning 24 points for the team while the Eagles scored 7 points, 32-18.

In the third and fourth quarters, the Raiders? unorganized defense benefited the Eagles tremendously. Their constant reaching and fouling sent Thompson to the free throw line 30 times in the course of the game. Despite having scattered defense, the Tigers? strong offence led them to victory.

Sophomore Hannah Avila, who had 6 points and 3 rebounds, says that she appreciates the senior captains? guidance on the court.

?I got a lot of help from Brandi and Nicole and I could not have scored without them,” Avila said. “Whenever they were driving to the basket, my man went to guard them. Which made me wide open so they passed and I shot from the block.?

FC was led by Thompson, who had 25 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

According to Eagle assistant coach Josh Gilio, he is proud of his players for the improvements they have made throughout the season. In order to defeat their next opponent, he plans on reviewing the game plan thoroughly with the team.

?We definitely improved from the last game and have been improving all year,? Gilio said. ?Each game we continue to get better and better at playing physical defense and crashing the boards. To prepare for the next game, we need to make sure everyone knows the game plan and is prepared to execute it under pressure.?

Hensley agrees with Gilio and says that the team improved on several areas.

?I think we made a lot of improvement with our intensity to start the game and our aggressiveness throughout the game,? Hensley said. ?We can try to slow down the pace of the game and execute more of our plays to help us get more points and to limit our turnovers. Highlight of the game was seeing other girls contributing and putting up some points when we needed them the most.?

The Eagles will next play Fowler Red Cats on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.
