West Coast Growers Fowler Easter Classic
EAGLES TAKE HOME THIRD PLACE–April 2-3
DAY 3
With the win against Fowler the day before, the Eagles were headed to the third place championship game against Kingsburg, April 3. This time FC was down 4-2 in the first and by four runs in the 5th inning. However, once again they fought back, scoring runs in the 5th and 6th before dramatically winning with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th.
The winning run came from a walk-off double by junior JP Caprioglio in the seventh. Caprioglio also finished with 2 RBIs.
Ryan Neufeld, ’12, went 3-4 with a double and scored twice while Trevoy York, ’12, went 1-3 and scored once. Austin Rurik, ’12, who took the Golden Glove award for the tournament, batted 2-4 against Kingsburg and scored twice.
“It feels amazing to get third,” Rurik said. “I mean we went into this tournament with no expectations of doing great and we ended the tournament undefeated. We got third place by never giving up, three of our games we were down runs and kept battling back and ended up victorious.”
After three days of competition, York was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player while Neufeld and Rurik were named to the All-Tournament team.
“It felt great to get the award because I knew that it was actually a very difficult award to receive,” York said. “Then also to finally be able to play with DIII teams like Washington Union and Kingsburg. If you think about the pool of athletes that they choose from and the amount of students we have at our school, it really is outstanding that we are even capable of playing with teams like Union, Fowler and Kingsburg.”
Head Coach Noah Heinz says the team has been following their game plan and hopes their winning streak continues.
“We have executed our plan well over the last six games and we have been rewarded with five wins and a tie,” Heinz said. “This team experienced losing many times last year and also lost the most important game of the season. Now that they know what it takes to win they can follow our blueprint to make sure we have a chance to win every game.”
DAY 2
FC first took on the Fowler Redcats in the semi-playoffs, April 2. With a chance to play in the finals, the Eagles looked sharp for their third game of the tournament. After going up 4-2 in the first inning, the Eagles never looked back as they took the victory 7-5.
York went 3-3, two doubles, one triple and three RBI’s, and Neufeld went 2-3, one double. In the past four seasons, FC has now beat Fowler twice and Neufeld says it was a great game.
“It feels pretty incredible because they are a great team and very disciplined mentally and physically,” Neufeld said. Going into the game we knew that if we beat them there was a good chance we could make it to the championship game of the tournement and we wanted to make a statement to them since we play them twice in league as well.”
The Eagles will next play Riverdale to start league play, April 10.
