As homecoming approaches, each class will compete in the float competition during half time, Oct. 26. Until then, students meet and collaborate to construct their chosen theme.

To go along with the theme, “Once Upon a Homecoming,” the sophomore class has chosen to portray The Wizard of Oz. Check back each week to see updates on their progress as the deadline approaches.

Oct. 17

As homecoming approaches rapidly everyone begins to dedicate more and more time to their float in hopes of winning first place. This year, as the sophomores second time building a float,Cole Nale provided the trailer and offered up his house to host the construction.

The homecoming theme this year, “Once Upon A Homecoming,” paved the way for the sophomore float theme of The Wizard of Oz. The sophomores are hoping that their hard work and dedication will pay off and that they will win first place.

Many students took part in the construction and making of the float last year in hopes of proving that the freshman class is one to be feared. Last year the class placed third, portraying the board game “The Game of Life”.

Lindsey Baker-Pauls opened up her house for the viewing of the movie for the students who had not seen The Wizard of Oz. She also uses her artistic talents for the decorations on the float.

“I think we could have done a lot better last year if our float was bigger,” Baker-Pauls said. “We found a bigger float this year and I think if we work the same amount as we did last year we will see great results. What I like about float building is the bonding experience that comes from it, what I don’t like is that some people don’t really work and we don’t get as much done as we had hoped.”

Many students attended both float meetings, amongst them Nick Fontes puts his talents to good use in hopes of making the float better than last year’s.

“I think that last year we could have been more organized as a class and gotten a bigger trailer,” Fontes said. “So I’m excited for this year’s improvements. I like that everyone gets together and works as a team. But I don’t like the idea of a bunch of sophomores with power tools.”

So far, the sophomores have nailed together planks of wood to create the foundation of the float and have constructed the backdrop. They have yet to decorate and characterize the float.

There have been two float meetings thus far. The next meeting will take place at Nale’s house (5840 N. Biola Fresno,CA 93723) from 1-6 p.m., Oct. 17.
