The Battle of Antietam, was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties and ended in a draw, but the Confederate retreat gave Abraham Lincoln the ?victory? he desired before issuing the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
The CWR offers two battle reenactments both days along with educational outdoor classrooms with historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Sojourner Truth and Walt Whitman. There will be, musicians, dancers, artisans and hundreds of reenactors involved to capture the sights, sounds and smells of the 1800s. Returning, is the popular Twilight Battle and Lantern-Led Widows? Walk. New this year is the Children?s Craft and game tents.
If you are interested in dining with an Civil War soldier and sit atop hay bales or on the grass and enjoy a campfire buffet dinner under the stars, the Camp Night Soldiers? Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 27th. Prices are $45 for adults, $20 for children ages 12 and under.
