RIVERDALE TOPS FC
The Eagles played the Riverdale Cowboys for the first time this season on Jan. 21 at home on the North field, losing 9-1 in a West Sequoia League contest.
The Eagles scored early to lead 1-0, but the Cowboys used their roster depth and quick ball movement to score 9 consecutive goals before the final whistle blew.
Head coach Matt Markarian says that the Eagles played well and showed a lot of heart for having no subs and several injured team leaders.
?It was tough without any subs,? Markarian said. “We just need to keep playing through the whole half instead of letting down our defense. It makes it tough with four or five people hurt from previous games but we pulled through and we have several games left to improve our skill.”
Junior Christian Saylor said that it felt good scoring the first goal of the game and that the Eagles just need to keep working during practice.
?It felt really good scoring the first goal of the game,? Saylor said. ?It was nice being the first to score and it really increased our morale. We just need to find where we play best and then increase our skill in that area.?
Senior captain Juan Ruelas was disappointed with the team’s effort and thinks that the Eagles did not play to their full potential.
“As a team, we could have done a lot better,? Ruelas said. ?They are one of the best teams in the league, but we still played poorly. Despite all the injuries, we need to keep playing hard, I even had a fractured elbow! But we just have to keep pushing through and then we’ll come up with a win.?
The Eagles will next play away in Fowler against the Fowler High School Redcats.
