As homecoming approaches, each class will compete in the float competition during half time, Oct. 25. Until then, students meet and collaborate to construct their chosen theme.
To go along with the theme, “It’s a bird, it’s a plane. No, it’s Homecoming!” the freshmen class has chosen to portray Power Rangers. Check back each week to see updates on their progress as the deadline approaches.
The freshmen class tackled a whole new experience: float building. They planned to build a float which they hoped would win first place at the homecoming game. The theme for homecoming this year was “It’s a bird, it’s a plane. No! It’s Homecoming!” The class decided to be original and chose the Power Rangers to save the day.
A few members of the class met at Hannah Nale’s, ’17, house on Oct. 12 for the first official work day and meeting. They discussed the plans for the float like who would play the Power Rangers and who would play the villains they fight. Working as a team and collaborating they came up with a vibrant color scheme and design.
The work was not easy but for the next two Saturdays and one Sunday they strived for perfection in making the float a colorful backdrop for the epic Power Ranger battle action. They all had to work really hard to finish in time but it was not all work and no play. The class still found time to have fun and get to know each other a little bit better.
While painting the background of the float, the girls could not help but get paint and sparkles everywhere, while the boys cut the cardboard to make the desired set. While waiting for the paint to dry on the last pieces, the girls started painting each other and singing along to the music they were listening to.
The live action TV show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers launched on Foxs Kids programming back in the early 90’s before the freshmen class was even born and became a pop culture icon. It has lasted 20 television seasons with 17 different themed series. Perhaps the freshmen class chose the Power Rangers because they identify with the tenacity of the heroes who always fight together as one, against some strangely outlandish villains. Or maybe they just liked the colors. Either way the class of 2017 hopes to make this an unforgettable homecoming victory. “It’s Morphin Time!”
Update, Oct. 25
Homecoming night everyone was full of spirit. Running around, laughing and having a good time. This was going to be a night to remember.
The freshmen were at their float, making final preparations. Those selected to play the Power Rangers were running around in different color morph suits fighting and throwing out candy. Some of the villains were wearing all black and were spraying people with silly string, while a few boys dressed up like chickens and a bunny. Although it may have looked a little random, these characters were portraying the villains.
Pink Power Ranger Amber Wilson, ’17, was excited and had a lot of fun with the float. She enjoyed the work and seeing everyone come together to accomplish one goal.
“I think for it being our first float we did a pretty good job,” Wilson said. “I think we attracted a pretty good crowed with our diversity. Ours was pretty different from the rest. At first I was kind of nervous because I thought it would be embarrassing, but its kind of just fun to do this with your school.”
The news came about the placing of the floats and the freshmen were overly excited to hear their float tied for second with the sophomores. Nathaniel Adams, ’17, played the green Power Ranger and was very confident that the freshmen would do well, and was pleased to hear their placing amongst the floats.
“It’s our freshmen float so getting second is really big for us,” Adams said. “We started late and we didn’t really know what we were doing much, but we got second so that feels good. There were ups and downs to the float building. Sometimes we would get a lot of work done and others it was just slower. But over all it came out really well for how much time we spent on it.”
