Leadership students help out local charity
The Convoy of Hope organization has invited campus students to volunteer at Convoy Fresno , Nov. 23. This event is located at the Fresno Fair Grounds and will reach to people across the Fresno community who have significant financial, physical, or spiritual needs. The less fortunate of the Fresno community will be able to receive health services, spiritual support and live entertainment all for free on this day.
The Convoy of Hope was started by Hal Donaldson in 1994 with the sole aim to give hope to the world through the provision of basic necessities. Donaldson lost his father when he was young due to an accident with a drunk driver.
The support he received from the local community during this time inspired him to start an organization where others in need could be comforted. Since its creation, Convoy of Hope has succeeded in providing the basic needs of millions of people both in the US and across the world.
The organization originally came to Fresno five years ago. They selected Fresno area because of the poverty levels and general need for hope. Now the Convoy is supported by several churches citywide and has succeeded in providing the basic needs of millions of people.
Approximately 15,000 people from the Fresno area are expected to come to the outreach program and a sizable amount of volunteers are needed. Opportunities for service include a wide range of activities that vary in difficulty and commitment. Volunteers may be assigned to hang flyers, assist in meal preparation or help run games and activities.
Although all Student Leadership members are required to attend, individuals and families may volunteer under the FC team as well. Students 12 years old and under must serve with their respective guardian and must be supervised at all times. However those older than 13 may serve alone if their guardians signs a release form.
President of the student body Caleb Nale, ’14, will be volunteering at the Convoy of Hope and is eager to come together with the other FC students to aid the overall community.

“I will be helping to set up the convoy of Hope,” Nale said. “I’m excited to see the Fresno community come together. Also, it will be cool to see the students come together to serve the people who are in need.”
Those who choose to volunteer must attend an mandatory rally at the Fresno Fair grounds from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Nov. 22. During this rally volunteers will be given their assignments and instructed on how to fulfill their duties for the event.
Bible and Leadership teacher Robert Foshee hopes students will recognize their place in the bigger picture through Convoy Fresno and be inspired to further spread hope.
“I hope they’ll see two things,” Foshee said. “One, that they’re part of the greater body of Christ in Fresno reaching out to families in need. They might not be able to do all the volunteering, but they can be a part of touching 10 to 15 thousand families for the gospel by setting up the Fresno fairgrounds. Secondly, I hope student will be inspired to come back and serve with their families.”
To volunteer, students must contact Vickey Belmont in the high school office either in person or through email.
