EAGLES DEFEAT COALINGA HIGH, 7-2
The FC boys tennis team took on Coalinga High for their first match of the season, Feb. 27. The Eagles won, 7-2, against a Horned Toad team that was missing several players.
FC won all five singles match-ups (Coalinga forfeited sixth singles), taking the top two games in tiebreakers, as juniors Garrett Hill, and Nick Morrison won. Since FC had already sealed the victory with a 5-game margin, Coach Will Gonzales allowed some lower ladder players to have their chance at first and second doubles, since third doubles was also a forfeit.
Placed sixth and seventh on the ladder respectively, sophomore Andrew Moore and junior Jordan Castro played first doubles, losing narrowly 8-6. Freshmen William Vander Kooi and Zach Passmore also lost a close match, 8-5, in second doubles.
Assistant Coach Will Gonzales was pleased with the result.
“It was good to get an opening win,” Gonzales said. “The match let me see where the everyone on the team is at, so I can know what we need to work on. I’m excited for league this year.”
Sophomore Nick Morrison was excited after winning a close match in second singles, 8-7, with a tiebreaker.
“It was cool to win our first match of the year, especially against Coalinga,” Morrison said. “It was an intense match, and I’m glad I could get the win. I think the whole team played well.”
Andrew Moore observed that the Eagles have great potential this year.
“Our whole ladder did pretty well,” Moore said. “Even though Jordan {Castro} and I lost, we put up a good fight. I think the team is strong all around this year, so hopefully we keep on winning.”
The Eagles will next travel to Caruthers High School to take on the Blue Raiders, March 4.
