Eagles loose to Firebaugh, Jan. 6
Concluding their final home game before the initiation of West Sequoia League (WSL) play, the Eagles of FC would host the Christ Ambassadors of Riverdale Christian. The Eagles were looking to rebound after a disappointing lost in their previous game against Firebaugh.
Initially, both teams started very slow. Missing easy lay-ups, free-throws and being off on their jump-shots, both teams struggled to put the ball in the hole. Despite both teams’ offensive woes, the Eagles defense at least stepped up in the low scoring affair.
Forcing turnover, steals and quick rebounds, they were able to get most of their points in transition. At the conclusion of the first quarter, the Eagles led 13-1. In the second, much of the same gameplay continued. Despite their struggles, Riverdale Christian managed to keep the gap the same as they trailed 22-10 at the half.
In the second half, the Eagles made an effort to get the ball inside since their outside shots were not falling. This combined with their continued success on defense helped increase the team’s lead. However, with their ability to get offensive rebounds and draw shooting fouls, the Christ Ambassadors would not go away without a fight. Nonetheless, by the fourth quarter, the Eagles had proved to be too much for RCHS, as they came away with the victory 49-25.
In the low scoring affair, the Eagles were led by Senior Aaron DeWolf with 11 points. Riverdale Christian did not submit their scorebook after the game.
DeWolf said the game was frustrating as shots were not falling, but was happy with the results and looks forward to next week.
“We could have, and maybe should have, won by a lot more,” DeWolf said. “Our shots were falling, and by the end [of the game] we were getting lazy on defense and rebounding. But I’m happy we came away with the won. Looking forward, League starts next week and we need to be at our best if we want to be successful.”
