The art of culinary design has been passed from generation to generation for hundreds of years. Carrying on this tradition, Sharon Scharf, home economics teacher, will be escorting her students to a local Savemart where a professional merchandiser can show them the ropes.

“We’ve been going on this trip for five years now,” Scharf said. “I always enjoy it. The students get the opportunity to learn from someone in the nutrition industry.”

While touring Savemart on Sept. 23, students will be introduced to concepts such as merchandizing, reading nutrition labels, smart shopping and consumer education.

“I’m glad that we’re going so that I can be prepared to live on my own someday,” Jenna Clay, ’04, said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Scharf hopes that such an outing will benefit her students later on in life, giving them skills that will be used on a day-to-day basis.

“As a dietitian, I know the importance of understanding food and your health,” Scharf said. “Savemart has a wonderful program offering this educational opportunity.”
