The boys’ basketball team continued to gain momentum after impressive non-league tournament showings, with a 60-55 victory at Fowler in their West Sierra League (WSL) opener. Following their first place finish at the Coast Union Tournament Dec. 18-20, the boys will now turn their attention to league competition, according to head coach Mike Neal.
“We played well in our preseason tournaments, better than most expected,” Neal said. “Now we are fully focused on our league games, and if we continue to perform in the way we are capable of, we should be a big factor in league play.”
The Eagles, led by leading scorer Ross Charest, ’05, come into league play as the favorites to win league based on their performances at preseason Kerman, San Diego and Coast Union tournaments. The Eagles, paced by Charest’s 28 points, defeated league rival Fowler on the road, providing an excellent beginning to league play.
“Over victory over Fowler was definitely a momentum builder,” Charest said. “Since it came on the road, that gives us more of a head start because we feel more comfortable playing at home.”
Charest, a transfer from Wisconsin, leads the Eagles in points scored per game and has been their most valuable player so far this season, according to Neal.
“Ross brings a totally different dimension to the team,” Neal said. “He is a complete player: a ball handler, scorer and leader. He has extensive knowledge of the game of basketball, so he brings out the best in our young players, which makes us a better team.”
After their victory over Fowler, the Eagles face a schedule of 13 remaining league games, including six on the road. The boys hope to continue their success on the road again Jan. 9, as they travel to Caruthers for a 7:30 P.M. tip-off.
