The soft serenade of an acoustic guitar and a smooth melodic voice fills the CD players of John Mayer lovers, as many fans anticipate his upcoming Feb. 22 concert at the Save Mart Center.
The Connecticut native grew up listening to the blues and picked up his first guitar at age 13. It was not long after that he began to perform in local blues clubs, impressing audiences with his mature sound.
Mayer grew up idolizing bands like the Police and Stevie Ray Vaughn and, if you listen closely, these sounds are contemporarily re-invented through Mayer’s albums.
When Mayer broke through the under ground music scene with his debut album, Room for Squares, he was a little known 22-year old with a musical agenda. Later this earned him a triple-platinum record which remains in the billboard top 100 after 80 consecutive weeks.
“John Mayer is so talented and his music is so charming,” Kim Bimat ’06, said. ” I am ecstatic to see him live!”
Mayer’s new album, Heavier Things, gives listeners a new sound that features his electric guitar and a more mature feel. With songs like “Bigger than my body” and “Clarity,” Mayer appears to begin a new chapter of his life through song.
“I like his new album better,” Sharayah Bell ’04, said. “His talent is really showcased in heavier things and I can’t wait to see what he does next.”
The new pop-rock group Maroon 5, who recently claimed their own platinum record, will join Mayer on stage.
