The Feather, leadership class team up for Kids Day
As cars whizzed by, students waved their newspapers in the air, eagerly trying to snag the attention of passers-by in order to sell special Kids Day papers. The campus leadership class sold newspapers to benefit Children’s Hospital Central California on March 16.
“Despite the early morning out students showed up an hour before our papers did,” Josh Tosland, student leadership advisor, said. “We sold all our papers in record time and made $150 extra in donations.”
The first annual Kids Day was held in March of 1988 and since then the Kids Day program has raised approximately $1.9 million dollars. The papers are sold for $1 in 21 towns and communities in Central California.
“Getting up that early was awful,” Barbara Krikorian, ’07, said. “After I had my coffee and sold a few papers it ended up being a great experience. We are up to raise cash for Valley Children’s Hospital.”
Money raised on Kids Day is used for projects including expanding the hospital’s emergency department. Student leadership volunteers began selling The Bee at 6 A.M. and sold out by 7:30 A.M., selling all 300 copies.
These special papers include a copy of The Fresno Bee and a special section, which features stories about Children’s Hospital patients from all over the Valley.
“Kids Day is a wonderful opportunity for the students to be involved in serving and helping the community,” Eunie McEntee, leadership advisor, said. “It’s also a lot of fun for us [advisors] to drop off juice and doughnuts to our early risers.”
Community volunteers sold 278,000 papers this year, surpassing last year’s sale of 244,000 papers.
