Every month The Feather highlights one individual from the student body who demonstrates exemplary character and or admirable dedication to classes or extracurricular activities. Teachers choose those who display the before mentioned characteristics in the classroom setting. The objective of the following article is to honor the effort of students to live by Caleb Code Standards: Seek Truth, Speak Life, Serve Others.
October’s featured student is Juliana Lozano, ’18, nominated by mathematics and science teacher Scott Bucher.
Bucher says Lozano displays genuine enthusiasm for chemistry and goes beyond expectations in her work.
“She does more than pay attention,” Bucher said. “She is truly interested. Her work is done very well and she seems to be one of the top students. That’s why I choose her.”
This marks Lozano’s eleventh year at FC and earns her the official title of “lifer.” This semester Lozano challenged herself with difficult classes such as Honors English and AP US history. In addition, Lozano joined several of the campus’s programs and clubs including CSF, Sister to Sister, cheer and ensemble.
Lozano moved houses at the start of freshmen year and met some personal difficulties throughout this period of time. However, she says sophomore year brought new growth and the achievement of goals first set as a freshman.
“This year has been a lot better than freshmen year just because I’m getting more used to things and such,” Lozano said. “I had moved during freshmen year so I’m just getting over adjusting to that. It’s better to adjust in sophomore year and I have already made stronger relationships with certain people. I had a thing going freshmen year where I was trying to make myself a more positive person and so I feel that I have begun to almost achieve that goal this year.”
She’s a very passionate and wise person. You can always see how much she cares about people and the things that she loves, which I think is a wonderful quality. She makes such an amazing friend because she’s willing to do anything to stand up for others. She’ll always defend and protect her friends out of love for them. She’s such a considerate, caring and loving person. It’s a privilege to call her my friend. —Katy Blankenship
In addition to school work and extracurricular programs, Lozano pursues her passion for the arts on a regular basis. She wrote poetry and read from a young age and kept the habit throughout the years. Gymnastics also took root at a young age and in recent months, Lozano taught herself the guitar and the Ukulele as well.
Lozano says she chooses activities of interest in order to maintain and enrich a healthy curiosity about these subjects and combat stress.
“I tend to join things that spark my creativity,” Lozano said. “For example, I’m in the ensemble with Mrs. Ainley and I’ve always loved music so that just keeps me going with my music. When I write poetry I do it whenever it comes to me. That’s how I write and when it comes to me I will kind of doodle it on the side with different ideas that come with it. That just something that you can do in between classes or whenever something comes up that you need to write.”
One significant tradition in the Lozano household is cartoon watching. From time to time Lozano and her Mother indulge in an afternoon of animated enjoyment. Lozano says she tries to spend as much time with family as possible.
“My mom really likes cartoon so sometimes we will just sit and watch cartoons together,” Lozano said. “I think we bond through that. My brother and I will also play video games together. I try to spend time with the people in my family quite often.”
Lozano attends Peoples Church for youth group on Wed. and Northside Church on Sundays. She also volunteers on occasion at the Red Cross in order to impact the lives of others and learn about the medical industry. She says even the most basic of gestures is capable of brightening a day.
“I did do some service at the Red Cross for awhile,” Lozano said. “I’m hoping to get back into it when I’m a little bit less busy. One of my Mom’s friends helps me figure out where to go and what to do. It’s just really cool to get to interact with different people in different ways. I was just greeting people at a hospital community meeting and it was just smiling and saying hello to everyone and I still felt like I had a positive influence on them.”
Lozano plans to pursue studies on neuroscience and psychology in the future. Schools such as UCLA and UCSF have already caught her attention with their medical programs. She says the function of the brain peaks fascination in her.
“I want to go into psychology and neuroscience, Lozano said. “ I quite like studying the idea of how the brain works and the way that people work. It’s just kind of interesting to me to be able to see how different people think, and how different people function.”
Friend, Carlee Whipple, ’18, says that Lozano posses a unique personality and a compassionate spirit.
“Juliana’s personality is hard to explain because she’s very different than most people I know,” Wipple said. “The thing that I think she likes most is drawing and artistic sorts of stuff. She’s a good friend because she’s always there for you, whenever you need her.”
Katy Blankenship, ’18, says Lozano displays loyalty, kindness and other such qualities typical of a good friend.
“She’s a very passionate and wise person,” Blankenship said. ” You can always see how much she cares about people and the things that she loves, which I think is a wonderful quality. She makes such an amazing friend because she’s willing to do anything to stand up for others. She’ll always defend and protect her friends out of love for them. Shes such a considerate, caring and loving person. It’s a privilege to call her my friend.”
Mother, Alicia Lozano, says her main hope in regard to Juliana, is that she will deepen her relationship with the Lord and glorify Him all her days.
“My prayers for her are that she would continue to grow in closeness in her relationship with Jesus,” Lozano said. “That all her days would be filled with His presence and that she would view life as a journey, learning, seeking and praising God throughout it, surrounded by people who love and appreciate her. She is proof that God gives the greatest gifts.”

Awesome article, Skyler! I think it’s really cool that Juliana writes poetry. Poetry is a great way to express oneself, and sometimes the words just randomly come to mind. Although I do not personally know her, Juliana seems to be a really cool individual!
