Girls soccer gears up for season under new leadership

After a disappointing end to last year’s season, losing 2-0 in the valley championship, the FC girls soccer team is looking ahead to starting fresh. During the offseason, coach Tony Martinez left his head coaching job to coach elsewhere.

New head coach Archie Ochoa is excited for the girls soccer season. Ochoa is a one-time Fresno Bee “Coach of the Year: and a two-time West Sierra “Coach of the Year.”

“I am very excited and blessed beyond words to be coaching at Fresno Christian High School,” Ochoa said. “I’ve entered my 9th season as a high school coach. However, I have been coaching for 16 years.”

At the beginning of every season, players have made goals for themselves. These achievements differ from player to player, whether it be winning valleys, league or beating a rival team.

This is freshman Sophia Kalugin‘s first year playing on the varsity team. Her personal goals are based on her ability to help the team.

“I’m hoping to accomplish mastering my position as a forward and hopefully make some goals,” Kalugin said. “I want to play my best to help the team as best as I can. I’m excited to bond with the girls and improve in my skills.”

However, senior captain Morgan Koop has different goals for her last season of high school soccer. In her last year of varsity, she hopes to take on more of a coaching role for the younger players.

“There are only two seniors on the team and mostly sophomores, so I want the younger ones to do well,” Koop said. “As a senior I want to make sure the younger ones are well taught, especially our new goalie. I’m the one training her and what I really want to accomplish is for her to become a great goalie.”
