Local ’42nd Street’ performance full of energy, bravado

Saroyan Theater hosts skilled, lively musical

Recently, I attended a performance of the musical 42nd Street at the Saroyan Theater. As someone who loves Broadway and musicals, the idea of going to a show close to home made me excited. However, the fact that the performance was small and local made me wonder about the quality of the show, and whether or not it would measure up to the shows in New York.

The show is mainly about broadway, and the difficulties making it and putting on a broadway show. The main character comes off as clumsy, shy, and a bit lost in the beginning, but her exceptional talent shines through in the end.

There are certain people who’s voices make them absolutely perfect for a certain part, and I believe that is what happened with every character in this show. Some new person would walk onto the stage and begin to sing or talk; in my mind I kept thinking what a great cast they put together.

Dee Henry, a member of the audience, shares her opinion of the plot line and artistic elements of the play.

“There were some aspects of the play that I really liked, for example the dancing, the costumes, and the music,” Henry said. “The tap dancing was awesome. The storyline was a little hard to follow but overall I had a great time and loved the play.”

This particular performance took place at the Saroyan Theatre, and I love going to the Saroyan because it gives me a reason to dress up and look nice for awhile. Another thing I love about going is the classy feeling of the theater, with everyone dressed in their finest.

On the way there, my dad thought we were without a doubt going to be late, and kept saying we were going to run once we got there. Though I thought he did not mean it, once we got parked he started jogging all the way to the front of the theater.

As usual, snacks were available for purchase in the lobby, and for this performance, allowed inside the theater. As I waited for the curtain to go up, I took in my surroundings and found that there were very few people my age in attendance. Though the fact that it was a school night probably contributed to this, the amount of young people compared to the amount of older people was interesting.

We bought tickets closer than the date of the performance than normal, and the mezzanine seats were the only left available. Fears of not being able to see, or really tall people sitting in front of me began to creep in, but we got a perfect view of the stage, and since we were so high up, we wouldn’t miss anything that happened onstage.

Since it was not a play I knew very much about, and in truth one I had not heard of before, the performance given exceeded my initial expectations of what could be done in theater. That, and the amazing sugar filled hot chocolate that I got before the show began put me in a joyous mood.
