At the beginning of second semester, art teacher Sharon Scharf, left, allows several of her students to work on a project of their choice to be submitted into the Congressional Art Competition held at Fresno City College in the refurbished administration office, May 6.
Scharf, along with sophomore Ashley Erickson, middle left, junior GeeHyun Park, middle right, and senior Ashlyn White, right, attended the award ceremony and reception, and stood with Congressman Jeff Denham discussing their art pieces.
Junior Lizzie Williams and senior Hannah Joseph (not pictured) also submitted pieces into the art show.
Although neither of the pieces submitted by FC students placed this year, Scharf states how proud she is of her students and their creativity.
“I felt we made a very good showing at the show,” she said. “Watching other art teachers and students study our pieces affirmed that fact. Ashlyn White’s “Georgia on my mind” was such a magnificent watercolor. Its been fun to watch her mature in the medium. GeeHyun Park’s ink drawing is amazing. She has such a gift for pen and ink. Lizzie William’s collage of a baseball player was extremely creative and just fun!
Ashley Erickson’s three scratchboards of American birds, with added colored ink demonstrated the tremendous amount of control she has in the medium. And Hannah Joseph’s photograph of the door – what can I say – give Hannah a camera and you have a great photograph waiting to happen!”
After the reception, Erickson expresses her appreciation for Scharf and the encouragements and help she contributed throughout the school year.
“This is my fourth year in art, and each year has been unique,” she said. “Mrs. Scharf has helped me immensely when I was frustrated with something that didn’t turn out; she was always willing to offer suggestions and encouragements. Art is a special combination of focus and fun; while the techniques are important, Mrs. Scharf helps remind me to enjoy my work too.”
