Swarming the sea

A jellyfish swims through the ocean along side many other jellyfish because of the recent increase of their species, Sept. 6.

All over the globe, many jellyfish have spawned and increasingly populated many of the oceans, which is thought by individuals that global warming caused this epidemic. Alumnus Joshua Smith, ’11, environmental science major from CSUMB, thinks that because of this imbalance of nature that he should take caution while diving.

“Last week, a diver said that he had been stung around his face by a wall of jellyfish,” Smith said. “I have never cancelled a dive due to jellies, but I certainly have precautions.”

Many fishermen attempt to prevent this problem by killing of cutting up the jellyfish, but it has only increased the population of the species. Certified scuba diver Smith from Monterey Bay, has noticed this increase of jellyfish during his dives in August.
