With memories of long, arduous practices, intense battles on the court, laughs and sometimes tears, victories and defeats, the girls’ varsity volleyball season wraps up for ’04. Not without a bang, however.
On Oct. 9, these ladies became the first campus volleyball team in five years to win a West Sierra League playoff game. Coach Larry Orender attributes this success to their diligent work ethic.
“They have proven themselves to be fighters,” Orender said. “They are very capable of executing their sport at a high level. More importantly, they have identified themselves as a team; one that wins and loses accordingly.”
Orender gives recognition, for the majority of the team’s achievement, to the strength of senior players: Katie Ettner, Lindsey Martens, Alejandra Ramirez and Ester Tarudji. Although they will be missed greatly, he says they have left a lasting legacy.
“Our seniors have laid the foundation for success,” Orender said. “Their steady leadership has molded this program in the direction it needs to go.”
Orender realizes that with every sport, losses are inevitably a part of the game. This was exemplified on Oct. 11, as they lost to Central Valley Christian.
“We played poorly against a tough team,” Orender said. “That made the loss a rough one. But if anything, this team is resilient; from this defeat, they gained a lot of maturity to build on.”
Lindsey Martens, senior middle blocker, values her experiences with the team dating back to her first season in ’02.
“I have really enjoyed being a part of varsity volleyball,” Martens said. “When I think about highlights of my high school years, some of the most memorable times are experiences with the team.”
Martens wishes the best for upcoming members of the team.
“It was great playing with the underclassmen,” Martens said. “I hope we [seniors] have instilled in them the motivation to continue succeeding.”
Orender and the team see a season ending with the record of 18-11 and the likelihood for a promising future.
