After the Eagle’s game against the Sierra Chieftains, varsity basketball players, Stephan Melendez, ’13, left, and Jordan Boudreau make snowballs, Jan. 10.
In the car with the Bourdreau family on the way to Sierra High School, the last pre-season basketball game, Jill Boudreau, parent of Jordan Boudreau, talked to Jordan and Melendez about the black ice and the snow they might encounter traveling to the game. Since Melendez has never been to the snow he told the Boudreau family this who were quite astonished.
After a couple of seconds Jill offered to take Melendez up the mountain so he could feel and see snow for the first time. Right after the game Jordan and Melendez hopped into the car and headed to the mountains. Driving up the windy roads, there was no sign of snow fall, Melendez was sad because he really wanted to see the snow.
“I probably would have gotten another opportunity for a while; but after five minutes there was trees covered in snow, rooftops with lumps of snow, and driveways newly shoveled for cars.” Melendez said. “We came to a stop and we ran out of the car and I stared at the freshly fallen snow and then started to form my first snowball.”
After Melendez started to form snowballs, he started to throw them at Jordan. Melendez really felt like a kid again.
“I felt like a little kid, I started to throw snowballs, then I aimed at Jordan and he was my first victim of my first snowball ever.” Melendez said. “After about five minutes the adrenaline left, and I couldn’t feel my hands anymore, then it was my legs (I was wearing shorts); but I had one more mischievous trick up my sleeve, I formed a huge snowball and crushed it on Jordan’s shirt just for fun. Once back in the car, I sat on my hands to warm them up, and then fell asleep.”
The Eagle’s were defeated by the Chieftains, 68-49. The Eagle’s will next travel to play the Caruthers Blue Raiders, Jan. 15.
