A DeVry University representative speaks to the freshman English I class, taught by Greg Stobbe, about exploring career options, Feb. 25.
The guest speaker, Renee Getty, used iPads to show the students their options through a quiz. Freshmen gathered at each table to participate in the class quiz.
Academic Advisor Michelle Warkentin enjoyed the visit from DeVry representative because of the valuable message she spoke to students about college and careers.
“Today’s visit from the DeVry representative, Miss Getty, is a helpful way to reach all of our students on a large scale by exposing them to important topics about college and careers that aline with individual student’s interests and values,” Warkentin said. “My desire is to meet with every student on campus but this is not always possible; so this is a great way to introduce students to important topics.”
Warkentin wants students to start thinking ahead about colleges a future career plans so that she can help them meet their goals while in high school.
“My hope is for students to start processing what they are interested in doing and how they can incorporate this into a future career,” Warkentin said. “Then when I meet with them individually during their junior and senior years, they have already begun exploring their options and we can be more effective and intentional in our college/career planning together.”
Getty spoke on DeVry’s opportunities for careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Today she made presentations to students in senior, sophomore and freshman English classes. Getty will also make presentations tomorrow in English classes she missed. Students will fill out information in an effort to help them understand their career interests.
