Dear Editor,

Joan Swanbom’s words in her letter to the editor, “Idol commands controversy”, on April 1, made me glad again that I am a part of this faith community.

I love it when people speak their mind and their conviction – especially when it flows from the kind of faith Mrs. Swanbom has demonstrated for many years here at our school.

Her concern that the words “Christian” and “idol” do not belong together is well-reasoned. (“Isn’t that an oxymoron?”) I agree with her. As the adviser of the video production class I will continue to talk about ways to accomplish creative projects while keeping our values and our language consistent with the faith we profess.

When it comes to our projected “Fresno Christian Idol” piece, we are going to explore a better name for this project. We’ve already taken down these obsolete flyers. We are talking together as a class about how we can continue with the idea while steering clear of the problems inherent in this language.

Thank you Mrs. Swanbom. Thank you Feather staff. We’re moving forward.
