Soccer awards honor team leaders

As the sometimes-brutal soccer season came to an end, the players united to share stories and compare battle wounds. The girls? campus soccer team held its annual awards ceremony on May 1 to recognize each individual?s accomplishments.

Several awards were presented. Junior captain Ashley Sherr was honored as the MVP of the West Sierra League, also making the All-League First Team, along with sophomore teammates Amanda Sherr, Kristen Amerine and Christina Cabias. Jenny Beckman was selected for the All-League Second Team.

The Sports Boosters Club presented three players with the Eagle, Aaron and Simon of Cyrene Awards.

The Eagle Award is given for outstanding team leadership. It is awarded to the player who not only has athletic ability, but one who also contributes a good attitude, commitment and integrity to the team.

Ashley Sherr, center forward, claimed the Eagle Award for contributing the most to the overall success and performance of the team.

The Aaron Award is given to an athlete who is especially sensitive to the importance of spirituality when it comes to the success of their team and who conveys that sensitivity even in the midst of athletic competition.

Sophomore midfielder Aliza Ford received the Aaron Award for her spirituality and spiritual leadership among her teammates.

The Simon of Cyrene Award goes to the player who has demonstrated the greatest determination and the deepest commitment during the season. This athlete may be one who played while in physical pain or who overcame an injury for the sake of the team.

Senior captain Melissa Jimenez took the Simon of Cyrene Award, as she displayed extreme effort to push past personal limitations to make a notable contribution to the team.

?The team started the season as individuals,? Robert Foshee, head coach, said. ?They continued to improve throughout the season and came together to become league champs for the sixth straight year.?

The FC team finished their West Sierra League season with a 13-2 record and a 21-8-1 overall record.

?Next season I see a lot of potential in our team,? Foshee said. ?I think we have a chance to win the Valley Championship.?
