Biology sells the cell

Chocolate ribosomes, gummy golgi bodies and hard candy nucleus? were found in the A.P. biology class on Sept. 16.

Students were told to make a model of a human cell and label it. The rest was up to them to let their imaginations run wild.

?Mr. [Dave] McEntee and I decided to have the biology classes make and presents models of a cell,? Marvin Harms, AP biology teacher, said. ?I wanted them to learn the parts of a cell, but have fun at the same time. I had fun seeing what everyone came up with, and of course, eating the cake-cell.?

While using clay and styrofoam was one way to diagram a cell, seniors Krizia Tovar and Bethany Morton, had a lot of fun with their edible version.

?We used cake for the main part of it,? Tovar said. ?Then the rest was filled with candy and gummies to make up the colorful insides.?

The class as a whole enjoyed doing the projects and watching everyone?s presentations.

?It was a fun way to learn the parts of the cell,? Morton said. ?Even more fun though, was sharing and eating our cake cell.?

AP biology will continue their study of the cell with oral presentations on one part of the cell, followed by an experiment of their choosing during the next two weeks.
