Soccer anticipates new season

The boys? soccer team ended last season with a record of 1-12-1 in the West Sierra League [WSL]. Coach Matt Markarian plans to improve last season record, to win league title and then head to playoffs.

?I believe the team is playing hard and getting better each day,? Markarian said. ?To prepare for league we are working to be the most in shape and disciplined team in league.?

The team agrees with Markarian that their effort will show during league games and are eager to begin a new season.

?This season I think we will do well but we have to work,? Jason Savage, ?07, said. ?We have to try our hardest and fight for every game.?

Savage began playing soccer in kindergarten except during three years he took a sabbatical. For Savage, soccer is not only an enjoyable past time, but also an ongoing goal.

?I like soccer because it is fun to score goals and juke moves,? Savage said. ?I hope to become a starter and score goals this season. I continue to play soccer because I have set my goals on getting better and sticking with it.?

Gaining experience from last season seems to remain to focus of the players. While Savage will play various positions, Coleton Hutchins, ?08, will resumes his position on defense as marking back.

?I like soccer because I like to run a lot,? Hutchins said. ?I think we will do better than last year because we pretty much have the same team except everyone is a year older. I think we have all gained experience.?

The team?s first game will be at a pre-league at home against Laton High School at 3:30 P.M. Nov. 29.
