Photojournalist comments on personal growth

After a year on photojournalism and on The Feather staff, I have developed many new skills as a photographer and writer. Although The Feather brought its challenges, its experience was very beneficial to my work ethic.

While frustration was common in the first few months, I continued to grow and learn from my mistakes. A tip I have picked up from my adviser, Kori Friesen, is to see the world through the lens of a camera. Always think of ways to get that killer image.

Previous photojournalists sparked my interests in photography. I was amazed at their skill level of being able to take professional quality pictures. I realized the potential The Feather provided for me to become a better photographer.

After basketball and volleyball season ended, I was able to focus on photography even more. This is when I really improved my technique and became a hobby I grew to love instead of just any other class. One of the best memories of the year was taking the trip to New York with the team.

No movie or image could capture the city’s real beauty or culture when I took in the New York sky-line for the first time. The incredible opportunity to fly to New York with the staff and see schools from around the country compete for the CSPA Gold Crown showed me how amazing it is to be on an award-winning team.

These last few months of school made me realize the passion I have for photography. To capture a stunning photo through the lens of a camera is an award in itself.

I can remember shooting my first big event at the FCS 40th auction and what ran through my mind. It challenged me because of the darkness level in the room. The experience helped me overcome my timidness and come out of my comfort zone. In order to become the best photographer I can, I have to be bold. The opportunity to cover the event with Sophia Kalugin, ’19, also broadened my perspective of seeing the different angles a picture can be taken in.

Photojournalism and  taking a second publications class second semester helped further my technique. With two classes for The Feather, I learned how to write photo posts quicker with better quality writing.

I would like to thank my sister, Mariana Fikse, ’17, for encouraging me to do my best through the year. She taught me how to write and gave advice on how to be better. I couldn’t have done it without her and I’m thankful for all she taught me in The Feather.

Photojournalism shows the value each person has on the team. Everyone plays a significant role in order to make things happen. It taught me that to rely and trust people is key to a successful team.

When the year began, being able to take a decent picture and edit was a struggle. I could never get the settings right on the camera. The more pictures I took, the more familiar camera settings became.

Now that I have become used to the camera, I want a camera in my hands everywhere I go. Kids at play or a beautiful sunset make me wish I could capture the moment.

I would also like to thank Kori Friesen and Greg Stobbe for helping me improve my photography as well as writing skills. I am prepared for new challenges that lay ahead in the next two years of my high school career.

I plan to pursue my dream as a photographer by proceeding with The Feather next year. Already gaining the foundation of this year as a photographer, I intend to build on what I learned and grow even more.

Reflection gallery below is a variety of images captured throughout this year showing my growth in photography.
