Style Session No. 1 – School Is Back In Session – Style Session, That Is

As much as
As much as

Welcome back to school! I’m sure you were all thrilled to pack away summer and hit the back-to-school sales, right? No? Am I the only one who gets excited about fresh notebooks and sharp pencils and planning my outfit for the first day of school?

Okay, it’s just me, then.

This year is especially exciting for me because I have a 7th grader! He was so excited about starting junior high and getting a locker that his enthusiasm totally rubbed off on me! (My first day of 7th grade started in tears, but that’s another story.)

The only non-exciting thing, however, is that I have two boys and boys (at least mine, who are 9 and 12 years old) aren’t super excited about clothes. As long as it’s comfortable, they’ll wear it. It doesn’t even have to be clean! There was no real back-to-school shopping for us (other than new sneakers) and no attacking the closet for that perfect first-day-of-school outfit. Oh well.

Does it even matter what we wear? Clothes are just clothes, right?

WRONG.

Well, yes, in the literal sense clothes are just clothes and at the very least need to meet FCS dress code standards. But clothes can be so much more.

What you wear and how you present yourself reflect your personality and style. They affect how others see you and possibly how they will treat you. They send a message – this is who I am. Your clothes convey whether you are into sports, are artistic, are funny (slogan tees, anyone?) and they may even shout the message that you are not into fashion at all and couldn’t care less about personal style. And that’s okay, too.

But you have to get dressed. Every day. To some, it’s fun to plan what they’re going to wear each day. To others, it’s a boring chore.

In this blog, I’ll share my thoughts about clothing, fashion, sartorial tips, dress code, personal presentation, trends, and most importantly, what the Bible has to say about all these things. Because even though fashion may only be skin deep, what’s underneath your skin is what matters most. God cares about your heart way more than anything you put on your body.

I hope you’ll share your thoughts with me here on The Feather, because your opinion matters to me. If you have questions or topics you’d like to know more about, comment below. I’ve worked in most aspects of the fashion industry – as a fashion writer, as a booker at a modeling agency, as a fashion & beauty editor, as a stylist, and more. I know clothes, I know fashion, but I don’t know you – yet. I hope that will change. And if you see me on campus, please say hi!

It’s going to be a good year!
