Seniors spice up Groundhog Day

With Night of Stars steadily approaching, each class is frantically putting the finishing touches on their films. Yet the determination to win Best Picture and the everyday pressures of graduating do not seem to faze the senior class.

?Even though winning awards would be nice, we really just want the student body to enjoy watching their fellow classmates playing different characters,? Kaley Hearnsberger, director, said. ?Although it is always nice to be acknowledged for your hard work.?

The senior movie, The Day After Yesterday, seems to promote a way of life that most seniors try to take to heart: learning to live each day to its fullest.

?I think that the seniors will be able to relate to this movie very well,? Hearnsberger said. ?The main character, Phil Conners, gets stuck in a routine which often we feel each day at school. It will hopefully inspire people to take advantage of the opportunities they are given.?

In the movie Phil, played by Brandon Cain, is an unmotivated weatherman whose life seems to be going nowhere. When Phil covers the annual Groundhog Day festival in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he wakes up the next morning to relive the same day over again.

In hopes to encourage more class participation, the senior production team created a large number of small speaking parts for those that are interested.

?There are a lot of small speaking parts,? Tara Albrechtson, producer, said. ?This gives people with busy schedules an opportunity to have a role that?s not time consuming.?

Time is of the essence for the senior class. With college applications and scholarship deadlines steadily approaching, sometimes filming schedules can become a hassle.

?There are always challenges during filming,? Albrechtson said. But the biggest challenge is always filming around people?s schedules and still meeting deadlines.?

This romantic comedy has added to the already busy schedules of many seniors and their families. On Jan. 29, seniors and their families were offered the opportunity to be extras in the Gobbler?s Knob park scene.

?The best part of acting in this movie has been sharing time with all the great people involved,? Cain said, ?and laughing at the dumb stuff we do.?

For any senior movie, the expectations are great, and the anticipated ?kissing scene? tends to spice up anything. But sometimes things are not always as you expect.

?We had to alter a few things from the original film, but its pretty much the same,? Albrechtson said. ?We just added our own little spice!?

Night of the Stars will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11. Dinner will be at 6:30 P.M. and pictures will be held at 5 P.M. in the Grand Ballroom in the International Trade building down town. The films and awards ceremony will be held at 8 P.M. next door at the Wilson?s Theater.
