Win A Date promotes Sadies

When given a chance to be in control, one might think presenting oneself on stage is simple and exhilarating, but there is more to it than just that. With Sadie Hawkins scheduled for April 1, a new freedom to take control comes with the responsibility to pay for tickets and buy traditional matching outfits.

Many females have made elaborate plans to ask their desired guy friends to Sadies before another girl snags him. The apparent imbalance in the guy to girl ratio on campus makes the fight for a fun date intense.

With Sadie Hawkins only days away, the rush to find a date seems to be driving several girls to decision-making extremes including the Win A Date show no March 28.

However, Weis was not the first to experience the dating game; this is the second time this semester the game has occurred.

?I was too shy to ask anyone but I really wanted to go,? Kimberly Weis, ?07, said. ?I was afraid and did consider dropping out a few times.?

Earlier in the semester, Corey Maxey, ?06, participated in the first Win a Date game to score free tickets to Night of the Stars. He had to ask three mystery girls with disguised voices random questions so he could make an informed decision.

?It was pretty nerve racking,? Maxey said. ?It was fun though because I knew I would get a date either way, and I didn?t have to pay for anything.?

Patterned after Maxey?s date experience, Weis? participation in the show gave the junior not only a date, but also duo shirts and free tickets to the annual Sadies event. The mystery contestants were disguised as different wild animals and were shown only as silhouettes behind a partition.

Jason Harris, ?07, was the lucky bachelor chosen by Weis during the Sadies Win A Date show. The voices of Harris and the other contestants were disguised and they hide behind a partition while they answered questions.

?I didn?t want to wait to be asked to Sadies,? Harris said who went under the pseudonym of a tiger. ?Kim is a very cool person and the opportunity presented itself to get to know her better.?

Harris was not the only contestant, but Jordan Scott, ?07, and Luke DeGroot, ?09, participated as well.

?I liked the chance to win a date with Kim, because she is one of my close friends and it would be fun to go with her,? Scott said. ?It would have been a fun experience, and since I know her it wouldn?t be awkward if I won.?

It is not only nerve-racking for the contestants, but also for the bachelorette.

?I am used to being on stage with drama, but I did not have any lines memorized and that made me nervous,? Weis said. ?It was also much more difficult because I had to use my improv. skills.?

This year?s Sadies event will include a scavenger hunt at the zoo as well as other exotically entertaining activities. In honor of the wild theme, the mystery dating game was fashioned after, the famous jungle couple Tarzan and Jane.

Students are requested to arrive at school no later than 5:30 P.M. to board the bus for the zoo. The bus will also transport students to Cal Skate at 10 P.M. and arrive back on campus around midnight.
