Chicks in home economics

Chicks+in+home+economics
[/media-credit] Senior Suky Cheema, one of many students, plays with Cornish Cross chicks during seventh period home economics, Sept. 17.

Students in Kimberly Bell‘s seventh period home economics class observe one-week old Cornish Cross chicks as a part of their farm to table unit, Sept. 17.

P.E. teacher and private chicken farmer, Mick Fuller, visits home economics to discuss the benefits to raising poultry for egg and meat production. Fuller brings his Cornish Cross chicks to class, allowing students to gain a hands-on perspective.

Partnering with home ec. class, Fuller will raise birds until “processing day“ at his home, Nov. 10.

Last week, students experience a different approach to the unit as the class creates butter from scratch. To go along with their   homemade butter, students also made pancakes later in the week. To read more about Home Ec.’s lesson on dairy produce, check out Home economics learn about dairy produce.

Bell’s purpose for this farm to table unit is to teach students the food system and the process, steps between farm to table.
