New identification establishes security standards

As of Oct. 1, 2020, California drivers will not be permitted to enter domestic flights or secure federal facility that requires identification unless they have the new Real ID.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the new ID establishes security standards for state- issued driver’s license and prohibits federal agencies from accepting licenses that do not meet state standards.

If you choose to keep/renew your current federal non-compliant ID, you will not have access to enter domestic flights or secure federal facilities that require identification, unless you have a valid U.S. Passport.

The Real ID is not mandatory. You can still apply for or receive federal benefits, enter a post office or other federal facility that does not require identification, visit a hospital or receive life-saving services, and ride Amtrak or other public ground dedication.

Since the tragedy occurrence of 9/11, the federal government has made several attempts at ensuring more protective travels. Civics and economics teacher Robert Foshee plans to apply for the Real ID when his passport expires. He shares his thoughts on the act.

“Having state ID cards that meet a higher security standard is becoming more of a requirement in the attempt to make travel more safe and secure,” Foshee said. “The Real ID act is a way for California to meet this standard. For people who choose to apply for this specification, they will find a more streamlined way to travel and get through airports.”

However, according to the California DMV, the purchase of firearms or ammunition do require the Real ID.

To apply for the Real ID driver license or identification card, visit a DMV office and provide an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport with valid U.S. visa and approved I-94 form (photocopies will not be accepted), and proof of Social Security number (such as SSN card, W-2 or pay stub with full SSN). Original or certified copies are required. To fill out your application ahead of time, visit eDLapp.dmv.ca.gov.
