Civics propositions

[/media-credit] Seniors Bethany Pouliot (left) and Megan Raynes present their pamphlet on a made-up proposition in teacher Robert Foshee’s civics class, Oct. 10.

Seniors Bethany Pouliot (pictured left) and Megan Raynes, show off their pamphlet they created as a part of their civics class project, Oct. 10. Tasked with creating a mock proposition, students create a slideshow and pamphlet that goes along with their subject.

The class splits into groups of two or three, brainstorming ideas to draft up a proposition. Throughout the week, groups have created an informative slideshow including information about their proposition to educate the class. Groups also create pamphlet to be handed out, providing another visual aspect for the class.

Pouliot shares what inspired her and her group partner Raynes to make up a proposition regarding school start time.

“We chose to do our project on the school start time because we feel as if the start time right now is too early and by pushing it back an hour to 9 o’clock means that students could get more sleep,” Pouliot said. “I like the project because it gives us a sense of how hard it is to actually make an initiative on the ballot, so just by Foshee having us write our own initiative was really challenging but also a life lesson that I think everyone should know how to write one.”

At the end of the week, all students will be voting ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on each group’s proposition.

Some of the propositions created include, ‘Proposition 4: Controlled Fires’, ‘Abolish P.E. Class Requirement’, and ‘Shorter School Hours Proposition’.

Calling all seniors! What proposition did you create? Let us know down below in the comments.
